During my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, we learned about a concept called The Tack Theory. This story really helped me grasp the concept of what health coaching is all about. Health Coaching is a new(ish) concept that is not clinical and focuses heavily on Primary Food (not the first thing that comes to mind when you think "health coach". This concept was explained very simply, but got the point across clearly...
If you step on a tack with your bare foot, are you going to keep taking pain medication until the pain goes away? No, you are going to remove the tack.
Health coaches aim to remove the tack (whatever the "tack" in your world may be). Rather than treating symptoms, we dig deeper to discover what is causing these symptoms to surface. For example, a client who seeks my services for weight loss may be looking for healthy recipe ideas and more information on what to eat and what not to eat. After a couple of sessions it is evident this individual is an emotional eater which is why they struggle with weight and control. Underneath the emotional eating issue is a lack of self-love. Perhaps this lack of self-love stems from a poor social life or childhood trauma. We address these underlying "tacks" so that you are able to live your best life.
